Do it Yourself Bed Bug Treatment

While professional bed bug removal is recommended, there are a few DIY options. These will not eliminate a complete infestation but they can reduce the severity.

While not all of these work, some common ways to get rid of bed bugs yourself include:

  • Washing linens
  • Vacuuming
  • Freezing
  • Baking soda
  • Dryer sheets & moth balls
  • Diatomaceous earth

Best DIY Bed Bug Treatment Options

You can attempt three things that will help you get rid of bed bugs from your home.

  1. Vacuuming: Thoroughly vacuum your home. Pay attention to potential bed bug hotspots such as under furniture or between walls joints. Attachments can be used to reach hard-to-reach areas or to attach to pillows and cushions. Empty the contents of the cans into a garbage can outside.
  2. Wash bedding: High heat kills bed bugs. Place all bedding in the washer. For 90 minutes, wash the bedding at high temperatures (at least 140°F).
  3. Freezing: Similar to high heat, freezing temperatures have been shown to kill bed bugs. Infested items such as pillows, bedding, etc. must be kept at or below 0°F. You should keep the items in place for several days before removing.

Do Natural Bed Bug Treatments Work?

Do tea tree oil, baking soda, and diatomaceous earth really work to eliminate bed bugs? Unfortunately, they do not. These methods will not be sufficient to eliminate all bed bugs. However, these methods may be able to lessen the severity of an infestation, so they are worth a shot. If anything, these methods have a better chance of preventing pests than they do at getting rid of the pests!

DIY Bed Bug Treatment Failure?

A bed bug exterminator is almost required to get rid of all bed bugs. An infestation is not something anyone wants to have to deal with on their own. If you’ve tried to get rid of these pests on your own to no avail, contact our team of bed bug experts for help today.
