Do I Have to Throw Out My Bed Bug Infested Mattress?

You don’t have to throw your mattress out after a bed bug infestation. This is actually a bad idea. It is considered reckless to dispose of bed bug-infested items as it can spread the infestation into other areas of your home.

To get rid of any bed bugs in your mattress, it’s important to take the following steps:

    1. Take off all linens from the bed and wash them thoroughly in hot water.
    2. Even if they’re infested, keep the mattress and box spring where they are. Moving them can spread bed bugs.
    3. As soon as possible, contact a bed bug exterminator to treat it with heat or another treatment.

Bed Bugs in Your Mattress?

If you have a bed bug infestation, getting rid of your infested mattress of box spring is not the answer to getting rid of the pests. This is because, more likely than not, bed bugs are hiding in more areas than just your home. If you get rid of your mattress or replace it with a new one, chances are your brand-new bed will get infested, too! It’s crucial to treat your entire home for bed bugs—including your bed—to stop bed bugs from further spreading throughout your property.

Do I Need to Throw Anything Away After Bed Bugs?

If you are treated by a professional bed bug exterminator, there should be no need to throw away anything after an infestation. This is because with proper treatment, all items should be able to be salvaged. Instead of throwing out clothing and bedding, it’s recommended to wash them in a hot water washing machine. High heat will kill bed bugs and their eggs.

Furniture that was infested should be receptive to professional treatment. Of course, if you already have old furniture in need of replacing, a bed bug infestation would be the perfect excuse. It’s important to never move infested treatment until it’s been professionally treated to avoid spreading any lingering bed bugs.

Do Bed Bugs Infest Couches or Chairs?

Bed bugs can hide in places you might not be aware of if they are present. While it makes sense that bed bugs would be attracted to upholstered furniture, what about wooden items? Bed bugs can hide in cracks and crevices in wood furniture, including wooden chairs. For this reason, it’s important to not move or throw away infested item, even furniture, in the event of an infestation.
